Down in the kitchen, Strawberry, Tilly, and Henry were relieved to see her, though Strawberry was still shaken. “I thought you were behind me,” she said, but was interrupted by Henry, who clamored, “What happened?”

Mona tried to say, but no words came out. The story was so new it wasn’t ready for telling. It was too sad. Too strange. She wasn’t supposed to care for a fox. Foxes…they didn’t live by “Protect and Respect.” The fire had made everything all mixed-up.

“Give Mona a chance to catch her breath,” said Tilly, passing her friend a glass of cool water. “You’re okay, right?”

Mona nodded. She drank the water slowly, savoring each sip, much to Henry’s frustration.

When she was finally finished, he burst out, “You’ve caught your breath, now, haven’t you, Mona? Tell us…”

But before she had a chance, Mr. Heartwood strode into the room.

“Is Blaze all right?” Mona asked.

“Blaze? Who’s Blaze?” said Henry.

Mr. Heartwood took off his hat and set it aside. “The fox—” started Mr. Heartwood.

“Fox?!” cried Henry, his eyes wide.

Strawberry gasped.

“Yes. The fox. He is much better,” said Mr. Heartwood, answering Mona’s question. “In fact, he has left. And now you must, too.”

He made a sweeping gesture that included all of them, then sank into his chair, looking suddenly smaller than Mona had ever seen him.

“Mr. Heartwood, you don’t mean…” started Mona.

“Yes, I do,” said the badger, tugging at his whiskers. “It is time to leave the Heartwood Hotel.”
